OPENING WORDS
The first Antiseason 2024 block, like previous years, following the coming of spring in town, features a series of productions in its repertory which premiered during the past year. O by Sonja Pregrad and her collaborators shifts the choreographic paradigm towards clean and overstretched sensuality – durationally realising its materiality in a mystical echo of incantation and a circular structure of coexisting between the performer and the audience.
Anika Cetina and Valentina Miloš in their first joint creative and performative endeavour THIS ONE: MISERICORDIA face the deepest issue of humanity – the life vs. death phenomenon mirrored in the exploration of their own dance and choreographic experience, against the backdrop of Mozart’s monumental Requiem.
“oro supplex et acclinis / cor contritum quasi cinis / gere curam mei finis… I pray in humbleness / with a contrite heart / let me die in grace…”
OH, MARY SHELLEY by Silvia Marchig, set to the vertiginous melody of the theremin and saxophone by Ana Kovačić, decomposes the idea of a body as a wholesome and unique identity, evoking in Ana Kreitmeyer and Ivana Bojanić’s dance inhuman, monstrous, inorganic and eerie, as well as warm, sisterly, sensual dancing bodies.
“The monster always represents the disruption of categories, the destruction of boundaries, and the presence of impurities and so we need monsters and we need to recognize and celebrate our own monstrosities.” — Jack Halberstam, Skin Shows
The series of reruns also includes DVORANA ANA by Niko Mihaljević, as a performance without (visible) performing bodies, in which the hall itself, as a readymade performative subject, enters into temporal dynamics launching the audience into an unexpected and humorous journey across the universe of the hall.
“Ana, Ana, Ana, Ana, Ana, Ana, Ana, Ana, Ana, Ana, Ana, Ana…”
The visiting performance from the FEDERACIJA collective from Ljubljana is a 45-minute installation in the lobby of the Museum of Contemporary Art, with audio guides, in which the audience and the museum visitors by their presence alone become part of the performance PERMANENT EXHIBITION OF THE PRESENT.
Plants-creatures floating in search of life-generating rays of sun perform their dance under the lunar eclipse, Dies Irae awaiting merciful tears turns the wasteland of existence/stage into a metaphysical expanse, the gleaming and playful eyes of La Loba call for an encounter with the multiplication of one’s own transience, and architectural volumes housing ANTISEASON for the sixth year in a row are brought to life by creating their own poiesis.
Each new performance is in its essence and anti-rerun, a new encounter with questions, processes and relationships that shaped it, with new audience’s attention, and the intensity of community experience makes every performance unique and unrepeatable.
