The BLACK BOX SESSIONS program name stands as an antithesis to the first program of the year – in April – called WHITE BOX SESSIONS, referring to the white exhibition space of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb in which it was held. Still displaced from its original ‘home’ – the Gorgona stage – ANTISEZONA housed its four-day program at the Cultural Center Travno, serving as a ‘satellite’ or substitute space.
The program consists of a premiere, reruns and guest performances, envisioned and created for the theatrical black box of the stage and the spectators’ gazes placed at a safe distance within a darkened auditorium. The experimental and contemporary nature of the contemporary dance which ANTISEZONA curates lies precisely in the multidisciplinary approaches and the constantly active questioning – in other words, recontextualising the performative and theatrical conventions. As such, BLACK BOX SESSIONS destabilizes the frame of the theatrical proscenium building its own materialities on the marginal places of the fusions and frictions of performance, opera, feminist theory, queer, theater screenplays and – dance.
The program opens with two works which had their premieres within the curatorial-production framework of ANTISEZONA, attracting exceptional attention from both audiences and the professional public. These works are Feral by Ana Kreitmeyer and Sonja Pregrad and Sol by Silvia Marchig. On the second day Matija Ferlin performs Staging a Play: Antigone, a solo performance part of his Staging a Play series. Made for Happiness is on the third day, a piece by Sofia authors Iva Sveshtarova and Willy Prager, created in collaboration with playwright Ivana Ivković. The piece deals with the topic of happiness in contemporary culture. And finally, ANTISEAZONA 21 ends on the fourth day with the premiere of Quartet fff, by young author Nastasja Štefanić Kralj. Our simultaneously performative and discursive format Close Encounters of the Dance Kind and works created on the Performative Writing Lab workshop accompany the main program.
