Improspections invite Luka Švajda to share his artistic research project with students of the Department of Animation and New Media and the Department of Dance, within a four-day workshop and a public presentation.
“As a part of the larger research project investigating how dance operates as a meaning-making mechanism, this workshop will focus on the notions of matèrie ecrite (written matter) and immediate irreality. Matèrie ecrite is an invention of the French avant-garde artist Pierre Guyotat; however, this oratory, visceral, and rhythmic lexicon (i.e., a method of writing) would be repurposed, allowing us to experiment with different forms and media.
The most basic tools of this method will consist of:
A) automatic writing leading to large outputs of paratactic texts (lacking chronology)
B) movement practice which consists of a series of perception-based tasks stemming from somatic practices
C) the transformation of the already existing textual proposals into gestures
D) mnemonic techniques (e.g., memory palaces)
One more important thing to note is that, even though we would touch on some of Guyotat’s writing during the workshop, the central text would be Max Blecher’s Adventures in Immediate Irreality. So, the bits and pieces of this stunning text of Romanian surrealism will help us kickstart processes of collective imagination and perceptual dreaming, epitomized in Blecher’s use of the body as the recording/probing instrument of the irreal world. In other words, visiting irreality, wherein objects reign and oppress themselves upon our somatic constitution, will allow us to create while “immersed in the immanent movement”.”
This project is realized in cooperation with Divert / ANTISEZONA as a Performance Situation Room: Expose event, as part of the Life Long Burning 3 European project. This event is a part of the Improspections festival.
